Setting and atmosphere
Cómpeta lies deep in the hinterland of the Axarquía, about 640 metres above sea level on the edge of the Sierras de Tejeda, Almijara y Alhama Natural Park. The drive from Torrox Costa takes around 40 minutes through vineyards and pine forest. The village is known for its Moscatel grapes, from which the region’s sweet wines are made, and for a much fresher climate than on the coast. Summers are pleasantly cool up here, winters colder and wetter.
Living here
The village has a plaza with a church, restaurants and bodegas, shops for daily needs, a health centre and a lively international community. Markets, hikes and festivals take place throughout the year; the wine festival in August and the Night of Wine are among the best known. Plots are larger than on the coast, and many fincas come with a well, fruit trees or their own vineyard.
Who it suits
Cómpeta suits buyers looking for space, nature and quiet: for fincas with a pool and land, for retreats and for self-sufficient living. If you need the sea every day, the coast is a better fit. If you enjoy hiking, mountain biking and wine culture, this is one of the loveliest areas of the province.
